You are back at the counter with a bag whose zip will not close properly. Practise the customer’s request and the assistant’s question about the receipt, then ask about two possible outcomes.

The idea

Name the item with Bu çantayı iade etmek istiyorum (I would like to return this bag), then give the reason. To ask for a replacement, use Bunu başka bir çantayla değiştirebilir miyim?: bunu names what you hand back, and başka bir çantayla names what you want instead. Para iadesi mümkün mü? asks specifically about getting money back. Write iade etmek as two words and keep miyim separate from değiştirebilir.

Watch out

Değiştirmek asks for an exchange in this shop context; it does not clearly request your money back. Use para iadesi when that is your aim. Do not use dönmek for returning an object: it describes going back yourself. These questions ask what is possible; they do not promise an outcome.

Try it yourself

  1. You want to return the bag. Complete with iade etmek or değiştirmek.

    Show answer or example answer

    iade etmek

iade etmek: the customer wants to hand the bag back. Değiştirmek would instead ask to replace it with another item; the blank needs the infinitive before istiyorum.

  2. Ask to exchange this for another bag. Combine çanta with ile.

    Show answer or example answer

    çantayla / çanta ile

çantayla or çanta ile: this is the replacement bag. The attached form uses y after the final vowel and -la after a. Both forms fit after başka bir.

  3. Ask about a refund. Complete the noun compound with the correct form of iade.

    Show answer or example answer

    iadesi

iadesi: para iadesi is a noun compound naming a refund. Its second noun takes -si after the vowel in iade; bare iade leaves the compound incomplete.

  4. As the shop assistant, ask “May I see your receipt?” Supply the question particle with the ending for “I”.

    Show answer or example answer

    miyim

miyim: the assistant asks whether “I” may see the receipt, so the first-person ending belongs here. Mi follows the last vowel in görebilir, and y joins it to -im.

Use it today

In pairs, act out the dialogue, then replace the faulty zip with a bag that is too small. Give a reason, ask about an exchange and then ask about a refund. Swap customer and assistant roles.
