Two original exchanges show friends teasing about a bag and then setting a boundary about a presentation. You will recognise exaggeration, join in if you want to, and respond when the joke is unwelcome.

The idea

Şaka yapmak means to joke; espri is a joke or witty remark. Biriyle dalga geçmek makes a person the target of teasing or ridicule, so it is not automatically friendly. In an informal exchange, Yok artık! can playfully push back against exaggeration; tone and the relationship matter. If the intention is unclear, ask Ciddi misin, şaka mı yapıyorsun? To set a boundary, acknowledge the intention and name the effect: Şaka olduğunu biliyorum ama bu konu beni üzüyor.

Watch out

Şaka yaptım explains your intention but does not itself apologise. If someone is hurt, Şakadan anlamıyorsun blames them for not getting the joke. Acknowledge what happened with Fazla ileri gittim, apologise, and stop. With dalga geçmek, say benimle, not bana.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the informal reply that playfully rejects the exaggeration about the bag.

    Show answer or example answer

    Yok artık

Yok artık challenges the comic exaggeration: two books are hardly a whole house. Geçmiş olsun is a wish after illness or trouble, so it does not fit this playful reply.

  2. Complete the question “Are you serious, or are you joking?” with the correct question particle.

    Show answer or example answer

    mı

mı follows the last vowel of şaka, which is a, and is written separately. This half of the question checks whether the remark was a joke; misin belongs to the earlier question Ciddi misin?.

  3. Ask someone not to make fun of you. Choose the pronoun form this expression needs.

    Show answer or example answer

    benimle

benimle identifies the person being mocked in benimle dalga geçme. The expression takes the form meaning “with me”; the dative bana does not fit here.

  4. Choose the opening that acknowledges the hurt before apologising, rather than blaming the listener.

    Show answer or example answer

    Haklısın

Haklısın recognises the other person’s objection and makes the following apology coherent. Abartıyorsun would accuse them of exaggerating and undermine the apology.

Use it today

Act out the bag exchange twice: once with both people amused and once with one person uncomfortable. Change the next reply to suit the reaction. End the second version with an apology and a promise to stop.
