In this fictional neighbourhood conversation, a concert has been postponed. Practise passing on what you heard, asking who said it and correcting a misunderstanding without making the news sound more certain.

The idea

Give the source, then the message, then any limit to what you know: Bu haberi Ece'den duydum. In conversation, Ece diyor ki… names the speaker, Duydum ki… introduces something heard, and Bana dediler ki… leaves the speakers unnamed. These openings do not establish that the report is true. Keep a qualification such as galiba when retelling; add Yeni tarih henüz belli değil if the date is still unknown.

Deniz: Mahalle konseriyle ilgili bir haber var mı?

Selin: Bu haberi Ece'den duydum: konser ertelenmiş.

Watch out

If someone says Galiba konser ertelendi, dropping galiba makes the report sound more definite. Also preserve who is involved: gelemeyeceğim is “I won’t be able to come”; when reporting Ece’s words about herself, use Ece, gelemeyeceğini söyledi. A quotation and an indirect report do not keep the same person form.

Try it yourself

  1. Bu haberi kimden duydun? You heard it from Ece. Answer briefly, with or without duydum.

    Show answer or example answer

    Ece'den / Ece'den duydum

Ece'den / Ece'den duydum: the question asks who supplied the news. The source takes -den; Ece'ye would point towards Ece, not identify who told you.

  2. Ece: “Galiba konser ertelendi.” → Ece, konserin ___ ertelendiğini söyledi. Keep her uncertainty: choose galiba or kesinlikle.

    Show answer or example answer

    galiba

galiba: Ece has not presented the postponement as certain. Kesinlikle would add a certainty that was absent from her words.

  3. Ece: “Yarın gelemeyeceğim.” → Ece, yarın ___ söyledi. Retell this on the same day. Complete the word referring to her, not yourself.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelemeyeceğini

gelemeyeceğini: the person unable to come is Ece. Gelemeyeceğimi would make the report about your own inability to come. Since you retell it that day, yarın still points to the same day.

  4. Konser iptal mi edildi? — Hayır, sadece ___. The concert will happen later. Choose iptal edildi or ertelendi.

    Show answer or example answer

    ertelendi

ertelendi: the event is still planned, but for later. İptal edildi would say it was cancelled and would contradict the correction introduced by Hayır.

Use it today

In pairs, write a six-turn conversation about a fictional event. Give a source, ask for one missing detail, keep one expression of uncertainty and correct “cancelled” to “postponed”. Swap roles and retell the message on the same day.
