A possible move, a summer course, or more time for yourself: explain what you have in mind without making every idea sound settled. The dialogue shows how to ask about someone else’s plans and respond with a hope.

The idea

For an action you are considering, use -mayı/-meyi düşünüyorum: taşınmayı düşünüyorum, gitmeyi düşünüyorum. Add a time such as gelecek yıl or yazın. Umarım introduces a complete sentence expressing a hope: Umarım yeni işinde mutlu olursun. To leave a decision open, say Henüz kesin karar vermedim; belki presents a possibility.

Watch out

Do not carry the infinitive unchanged from gitmek istiyorum into this pattern: say gitmeyi düşünüyorum, not gitmek düşünüyorum. Also, umarım expresses a desired outcome; it does not mean the outcome is guaranteed.

Try it yourself

  1. Gelecek yıl başka bir şehre ___ düşünüyorum. Complete with the appropriate form of taşınmak (to move home). Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    taşınmayı

taşınmayı: moving is the action under consideration. The form is taşınma plus -yı, so the final word is not the dictionary infinitive taşınmak.

  2. ___ yeni işinde mutlu olursun. Express a hope for your friend’s new job: choose umarım or henüz. Write the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    Umarım

Umarım: you wish your friend happiness at work. Henüz would refer to how far something has progressed in time, not express this wish.

  3. Henüz karar vermedim. ___ sonbaharda bir bisiklet alırım. The purchase is only a possibility. Choose belki or kesinlikle; write the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    Belki

Belki: the previous sentence says no decision has been made, so buying the bicycle remains a possibility. Kesinlikle would present it as definite.

  4. ___ kesin karar vermedim. Say “I haven’t made a firm decision yet”. Use henüz or daha; either fits here. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    Henüz / Daha

Henüz / Daha: with the negative vermedim, both mean that the decision has not been made up to now. They leave room for a later decision.

Use it today

In pairs, write a six-turn conversation about next year. Ask about a plan, give a tentative intention, ask a follow-up question, leave one decision open, and respond to a hope. Then swap roles.
