Unexpected news does not always call for the same reply. These original exchanges help you show delight, question an unlikely claim or explain exactly what you are unsure about. Choose the reaction for the relationship as well as the news.

The idea

Gerçekten mi? asks for confirmation and can express surprise; Öyle mi? also picks up new information. Tone can make either sound interested or sceptical. Yok artık! is a stronger, informal reaction of disbelief. For a reservation, acknowledge a possibility with Olabilir ama... and name the uncertain point: süre konusunda emin değilim. Buna pek ihtimal vermiyorum rates something as unlikely; it does not rule it out completely.

Watch out

Do not use Yok artık! as a neutral replacement for Gerçekten mi? in every conversation. It can sound dismissive or as though you do not believe the other person. If your doubt concerns the time estimate, say so with süre konusunda emin değilim rather than rejecting the whole proposal.

Try it yourself

  1. All the paintings have sold. Choose Gerçekten mi or Emin değilim to ask for confirmation with happy surprise.

    Show answer or example answer

    Gerçekten mi

Gerçekten mi: the paintings selling is welcome news, and the next phrase expresses pleasure. You ask for confirmation; Emin değilim would instead announce your own uncertainty.

  2. A friend says this little notebook costs a thousand lira. Choose Yok artık or Olabilir ama for a strong informal reaction of disbelief.

    Show answer or example answer

    Yok artık

Yok artık: the striking price prompts an informal outburst between friends. Olabilir ama would concede a possibility and leave a reservation unfinished.

  3. Choose ama or çünkü: acknowledge the possibility, then add a reservation about the time.

    Show answer or example answer

    ama

ama: the second clause limits the first by questioning the time. Çünkü would introduce a reason for the first clause, which is not the intended relationship here.

  4. Choose veriyorum or vermiyorum to say you consider this unlikely, without declaring it impossible.

    Show answer or example answer

    vermiyorum

vermiyorum: the negative verb with pek makes the likelihood low. The speaker offers a cautious judgement, not a claim that the event is impossible.

Use it today

Write two four-turn exchanges about an exhibition: one with a friend about a surprising price, one with an organiser about an uncertain schedule. Add a follow-up question or a reason for each reaction, then explain your choice of tone.
