This A2 guide introduces exam vocabulary. TYS means Türkçe Yeterlik Sınavı, the Turkish proficiency exam developed by the Yunus Emre Institute. It assesses four skills and awards certificates at B2 or C1. A2 is the level of this lesson, not a TYS certificate level. Our examples are original classroom sentences, not official test questions.
The idea
Read an exam notice in three parts: institution, purpose, skills. TÖMER alone does not identify one uniform exam: Ankara University describes its e-YADİS system, while Gazi University lists placement, exemption and certificate exams. Seviye belirleme means determining a level; muafiyet means exemption. For the four skills, distinguish understanding written or spoken language from producing it: okuma, dinleme, yazma, konuşma.
| Skill in Turkish | Meaning |
|---|---|
| okuma | Reading: understanding written language |
| dinleme | Listening: understanding spoken language |
| yazma | Writing: producing written language |
| konuşma | Speaking: producing spoken language |

No Turkish device voice is available. You can still read the text.
Watch out
Do not treat a placement result as a proficiency certificate, or assume that two tests have the same rules because both names contain TÖMER. The institution and the full exam name matter. This page makes no claim that a particular certificate fulfils an admission requirement.
Try it yourself
Choose the abbreviation for the Yunus Emre Institute’s Turkish proficiency exam: TYS or TÖMER.
Show answer or example answer
TYS
TYS: the clue names the Yunus Emre Institute, which distinguishes this exam from a university centre’s tests. The abbreviation belongs to the exam name.
The notice says “determining a level”. Choose: seviye belirleme or muafiyet.
Show answer or example answer
seviye belirleme
seviye belirleme: the notice describes finding a level. It says nothing about exemption, so muafiyet would add a purpose that is not stated.
I am listening to a sound recording. Which skill: dinleme or okuma?
Show answer or example answer
dinleme
dinleme: the input is a sound recording. Understanding that spoken input is listening, even if an answer is later written down.
I am speaking Turkish with my friend. Which skill: yazma or konuşma?
Show answer or example answer
konuşma
konuşma: the learner produces spoken Turkish in an exchange with a friend. Hearing the friend is only part of the activity; the clue says the learner is speaking.
