You will distinguish understanding a particular task from knowing about a field, then connect verbs whose complements need different cases. Read the whole situation before choosing an ending.
The idea
Learn a verb together with its complement and its intended meaning. In bu işi anlamak, the accusative marks the particular task being understood; bu işten anlamak with the ablative means knowing about that kind of work. This is a contrast between constructions, not permission to swap cases freely. Conversely, a case alone does not settle the meaning: karara katılmak means agreeing with a decision, while toplantıya katılmak means attending a meeting; both use the dative. When joining clauses, choose the complement for each verb separately.
Examples
- Ben bu işi anlıyorum.I understand this task.
- Ben bu işten anlıyorum.I know about this line of work.
- Ben bu karara katılıyorum.I agree with this decision.
- Yarın toplantıya katılacağım.I will attend the meeting tomorrow.
- Bu öneriyi destekliyorum ve bu öneriye inanıyorum.I support this proposal and believe in it.
- Sana güveniyorum, ama bu açıklamadan şüpheleniyorum.I trust you, but I am suspicious of this explanation.
- Bu projeden vazgeçmek istemiyorum.I do not want to give up this project.

Watch out
Do not carry the accusative from bu öneriyi destekliyorum over to inanıyorum. To say that you support and believe in the proposal, write bu öneriyi destekliyorum ve bu öneriye inanıyorum. Naming the same proposal twice does not mean that its case stays the same.
Try it yourself
Complete with the correct form of iş: I understand this task; now it is clear what I will do.
Show answer or example answer
işi
işi: the following clause says that the speaker now knows what to do. The object is this particular task, rather than a field of expertise.
Complete with the correct form of iş: I know this line of work; I have worked in this field for years.
Show answer or example answer
işten
işten: years of work in the field support a claim to practical knowledge. The ablative fits that reading; işi would instead present the particular task as understood.
Complete with the correct form of karar: I agree with this decision; I think it is the right choice.
Show answer or example answer
karara
karara: calling the choice right expresses agreement with the decision. Nothing here describes attending an event, even though that use of the verb also takes the dative.
Complete with the correct form of öneri: I support this proposal and believe in it.

öneriye
öneriye: the second clause expresses belief in the proposal. Its complement must fit inanıyorum, even though destekliyorum has already taken öneriyi.
