Use -dikten sonra to place one event after another. You will distinguish the order of events from the time of speaking, and show who does each action.
The idea
Attach the appropriate form of -dikten to the verb stem and write sonra separately. The event in this phrase comes first; the main clause says what happens next. The phrase itself has no person ending: the main verb and context supply tense and participants. Okuduktan sonra konuşacağız can describe two future actions. Different subjects are possible: in Sen çıktıktan sonra ben kapıyı kilitledim, you left and I locked the door. A time interval goes before sonra: gönderdikten on dakika sonra. The suffix reference covers the individual forms.
Examples
- Uyandıktan sonra perdeleri açıyorum. After I wake up, I open the curtains.
- Çorbayı içtikten sonra dinlendik. After eating the soup, we rested.
- Kitabı okuduktan sonra konuşacağız.After we read the book, we will talk.
- Sen çıktıktan sonra ben kapıyı kilitledim. After you left, I locked the door.
- Yağmur durduktan sonra çocuklar bahçeye çıktı.After the rain stopped, the children went out into the garden.
- Mesajı gönderdikten on dakika sonra cevap aldım.I received a reply ten minutes after sending the message.

Watch out
Do not read the beginning of -dikten as a past-tense ending. In a plan for tomorrow, okuduktan sonra does not mean the reading has already happened. Do not add a personal ending to this phrase to express who reads; name the subject if context is unclear.
Try it yourself
Complete with “after eating”: Çorbayı ___ dinlendik. First we ate the soup, then we rested.

içtikten sonra
içtikten sonra: the soup was finished before the rest began. Putting the after-phrase on drinking keeps that sequence; içmeden önce would reverse it.
Complete with “we will talk”: Kitabı okuduktan sonra ___. Both reading and talking are planned for tomorrow.

konuşacağız
konuşacağız: the plan is for tomorrow and includes us, so the main verb must express future time and first-person plural. The reading is also still ahead.
Add the subject: ___ çıktıktan sonra ben kapıyı kilitledim. You left; then I locked the door.
Show answer or example answer
Sen
Sen: the person who left is the addressee, whereas ben names the person who locked the door. Naming both prevents the two actions being assigned to one person.
Add “ten minutes later”: Mesajı gönderdikten ___ cevap aldım. The reply arrived ten minutes after I sent the message.
Show answer or example answer
on dakika sonra
on dakika sonra: the reply came ten minutes after sending. The interval belongs between gönderdikten and sonra; this is a delay, not ten minutes spent sending.
