You will combine two statements about the same person without repeating the tense and person endings. This lesson practises sentence structure; the linked suffix lesson explains the spelling variants.

The idea

In the pattern here, -ip links actions by the same subject, often in sequence. Replace the first verb's tense and person endings with the linking form and keep the final verb conjugated: Elif çantasını aldı ve çıktı. becomes Elif çantasını alıp çıktı. The first action need not be in the past: in Sen okuyup anlayacaksın, both reading and understanding lie ahead. The final verb can also be a command. The link means ‘and’ or ‘and then’; it does not itself specify a long pause between the actions.

Patterns to compare
Separate statementsLinked actions

Çorbayı ısıtacağız. İçeceğiz.Çorbayı ısıtıp içeceğiz.

Watch out

Do not read -ip as a past-tense ending just because one action comes first. Also check who does each action: shortening ‘I opened the door and Elif came in’ to Kapıyı açıp içeri girdim makes me do both. Keep two clauses with ve when you need to preserve that change of subject.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the linking form: we stopped, then thought. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    durup

durup: the same group stopped and thought. Düşündük already identifies that group as ‘we’ and places the events in the past, so the first verb becomes a linking form.

  2. Keep the original future plan: tomorrow we will read and discuss the text. Choose the final verb.

    Show answer or example answer

    tartışacağız

tartışacağız: the original sentence describes tomorrow's plan. Keeping this future form preserves ‘we will discuss’; okuyup does not turn the reading into a past event.

  3. Elif took her bag and went out. Choose the form that links her two actions.

    Show answer or example answer

    alıp

alıp: Elif takes her bag and leaves. Her bag stays the object of taking, while çıktı supplies the past tense for the linked account; aldı would leave two conjugated verbs without a connector.

  4. The speaker opened the door; Elif came in. Choose the connector that preserves both subjects.

    Show answer or example answer

    ve

ve: the door is opened by the speaker, but Elif enters. Keeping açtım and girdi as separate conjugated verbs preserves those two actors.

Use it today

Describe two things you will do tomorrow in one linked sentence, then rewrite it in the past. Finally, write a pair of actions performed by different people and connect the clauses with ve.
