You will describe an earlier plan or expectation and then say what happened. The viewpoint is in the past; the planned event comes later than that viewpoint, even if it is still tomorrow now.

The idea

Use -ecekti or -acaktı for a future seen from a past moment: Biz akşam buluşacaktık. The speaker looks back at the arrangement. Contrast buluşacağız (we will meet), buluşacaktık (we were going to meet) and buluştuk (we met). A negative such as çıkmayacaktık describes a plan not to go out. To ask about the plan, say Gelecek miydin?: the question word is separate, and the past and person endings are on miydin.

Examples

  • Biz akşam buluşacaktık.We were going to meet in the evening.
  • Babam yarın dönecekti. My father was going to return tomorrow.
  • Çocuklar burada oynayacaktı.The children were going to play here.
  • Dün çorba yapacaktım ama evde mercimek yoktu.I was going to make soup yesterday, but there were no lentils at home.
  • Bu akşam dışarı çıkmayacaktık ama planımız değişti.We were not going to go out this evening, but our plan changed.
  • Saat üçte buluşacaktık ve tam üçte buluştuk. We were going to meet at three, and we met at exactly three.
  • Sen de bizimle gelecek miydin? Were you going to come with us too?

Watch out

Do not treat every earlier plan as a failed plan. Buluşacaktık alone does not settle the outcome. Ama can introduce a change; ve tam üçte buluştuk confirms that the meeting happened. Nor does çıkmayacaktık by itself prove that we stayed home.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the earlier intention, not a completed action.

    Show answer or example answer

    yapacaktım

yapacaktım: the missing lentils explain why the soup remained an intention in this context; yaptım would claim that it was made.

  2. Choose the earlier plan not to go out.

    Show answer or example answer

    çıkmayacaktık

çıkmayacaktık: the initial plan was to stay in. The later change contrasts with that plan; çıkmadık would report what actually happened.

  3. Ask about the earlier plan, not whether the person came.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelecek miydin

gelecek miydin: the question asks whether coming was in the plan. Geldin mi? asks whether the person actually came.

  4. Complete the sentence: the meeting really happened.

    Show answer or example answer

    buluştuk

buluştuk: the second clause confirms a completed meeting at the planned time. The earlier plan therefore did come true.

Use it today

Write about two earlier plans: one that changed and one that happened as intended. Add a sentence stating each outcome, then ask a partner about an earlier plan with Gelecek miydin?
