You will ask permission, offer help and make polite requests with -ebilir mi and the plain aorist question.

The idea

To ask permission or offer help, add -ebilir or -abilir (by the last vowel of the stem) to the verb stem, then the particle mi written apart, with the person ending on mi: oturabilir miyim? After a stem that ends in a vowel a y comes in (bekleyebilir miyim?), and git becomes gid- (gidebilir miyim?). To ask someone else to act, use misin for a friend and misiniz for a stranger or several people: kapatabilir misin? or the plain verir misiniz?, which is just as polite.

Examples

  • Burada biraz oturabilir miyim?May I sit here for a bit?
  • Bana bir bardak su verir misiniz?Could you give me a glass of water?
  • Telefonunuzu bir dakika kullanabilir miyim?May I use your phone for a minute?
  • Erken gidebilir miyim?May I leave early?In gitmek the t softens to d before the vowel: gid-ebilir.
  • Çantanızı taşıyabilir miyim?Shall I carry your bag? With ben this often offers help instead of asking permission. After taşı- a y is added: taşıyabilir.
  • Dışarıda bekleyebilir miyim?May I wait outside?
  • Biraz yavaş konuşabilir misin?Could you speak a bit more slowly?Misin asks one friend. To a stranger say misiniz: Biraz yavaş konuşabilir misiniz?
  • Kapıyı kapatır mısın?Will you close the door?No -ebil is needed: the plain aorist question already asks someone to do something.
  • Maalesef şimdi içeri giremezsiniz.Unfortunately you cannot go in now.A polite refusal uses the negative -emez, as in giremezsiniz, not a bare hayır.
  • gelebilirsinizyou may comegelebil-ebil- / -abil-: can and may (gelebilirim)ir-ir / -ar / -er: the aorist (gelir, yapar)sinizAorist person endings: -im, -sin, -iz, -siniz, -ler

Watch out

The person ending says who is asked, so do not mix them up: Pencereyi açabilir miyim? asks whether you may open the window; to ask someone else to open it, say Pencereyi açabilir misiniz? Write mi apart and put the person on mi (gelebilir miyim), not gelebilirmiyim.

Try it yourself

  1. Ask permission for yourself: May I sit here?

    Show answer or example answer

    miyim

miyim: you ask for yourself; the last vowel of oturabilir is i, so the particle is mi, and ben adds -yim.

  2. Ask a stranger politely: Could you help me?

    Show answer or example answer

    misiniz

misiniz: you address a stranger with siz; the vowel i gives mi, then -siniz.

  3. Write the verb: May I leave early? Mind the t of git.

    Show answer or example answer

    gidebilir

gidebilir: the t of git turns into d before the vowel of -ebilir.

  4. Write the verb: May I wait here?

    Show answer or example answer

    bekleyebilir

bekleyebilir: bekle ends in a vowel, so a y stands before -ebilir; the vowel e gives -ebilir.
