You will separate the time of an event from your confidence about it. A possible delay, an uncertain location and a conclusion drawn from clues need different predicates.

The idea

In a prediction, -ebilir expresses possibility: gecikebilir means “may be delayed”. Context distinguishes this use from ability. For a state, use olabilir: yanlış olabilir means “may be wrong”. With a completed event, compare bitmiş olabilir (“may have finished”) and bitmiş olmalı (“must have finished”). Both look back at completion here; olmalı presents a stronger inference, not direct knowledge. With a state, yanlış olmalı likewise means “must be wrong” in an inferential context. These forms do not encode fixed percentages. To leave a negative outcome possible, use gelmeyebilir (“may not arrive”); gelemez instead presents inability or impossibility.

Bu hesap yanlış olabilir.Bu hesap yanlış olmalı.

Examples

  • Tren bu gece gecikebilir. The train may be delayed tonight.
  • Anahtar çekmecede olabilir. The key may be in the drawer.
  • Misafirler erkenden gitmiş olmalı.The guests must have left early.
  • Bütün sandalyeler boş; toplantı bitmiş olmalı.All the chairs are empty; the meeting must have finished.
  • Toplantı bitmiş olabilir; içeriden ses gelmiyor. The meeting may have finished; no sound is coming from inside.
  • Bu hesap yanlış olabilir. This calculation may be wrong.
  • Kargo bugün gelmeyebilir. The parcel may not arrive today.
  • Toplantı beşte bitmeli. The meeting should finish at five.

Watch out

Do not shorten “must have finished” to bitmeli. In a deadline context, Toplantı beşte bitmeli says when the meeting should finish; Toplantı bitmiş olmalı draws a conclusion about completion. Nor does -miş in the latter require somebody to have told you: you can infer it from the empty chairs.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose a possible delay, not a requirement. Write the missing predicate. Tren bu gece ___. (gecikebilir / gecikmeli)

    Show answer or example answer

    gecikebilir

gecikebilir: the speaker leaves a delay open as a possibility; nothing requires the train to be late. Gecikmeli would introduce necessity or expectation.

  2. All the chairs are empty. Draw a strong inference about an already completed event. Write the missing predicate. Toplantı ___. (bitmiş olmalı / bitmeli)

    Show answer or example answer

    bitmiş olmalı

bitmiş olmalı: the empty chairs are evidence for the conclusion that the meeting is already over. Bitmeli would say that it should finish, without concluding that it has.

  3. The totals differ. Treat an error in this calculation as one possibility, not a firm conclusion. Write the missing predicate. Bu hesap ___. (yanlış olabilir / yanlış olmalı)

    Show answer or example answer

    yanlış olabilir

yanlış olabilir: the calculation is one possible source of the discrepancy. Without firmer evidence, yanlış olmalı would express more confidence than the prompt allows.

  4. Leave open whether the parcel arrives today; do not say arrival is impossible. Write the missing predicate. Kargo bugün ___. (gelmeyebilir / gelemez)

    Show answer or example answer

    gelmeyebilir

gelmeyebilir: arrival and non-arrival both remain possible. Gelemez would rule arrival out or present an obstacle that prevents it.

Use it today

Imagine a silent meeting room. Write one possible explanation with olabilir and one stronger inference with olmalı. Add a clue for each and say whether you mean a state or a completed event.
