When helping a relative abroad, familiar family Turkish can meet unfamiliar document language. This fictional dialogue practises reading labels and asking precise questions; it gives no application procedure or legal advice.

The idea

Read a document phrase in three steps: identify the document, its version and the person concerned. Nüfus kayıt örneği names a civil registry extract; örnek here is not a practice sample. Vekâlet refers to representation or authority to act, while vekâletname names the document. In belgenin aslı and belgenin fotokopisi, the last word distinguishes the original from a photocopy. Babamın adına düzenlenmiş says it was issued in my father’s name. Başvuru sahibi identifies the applicant. For unclear wording, ask Burada … mı kastediliyor? rather than guessing.

Derya: Babam için bir form dolduruyorum. Başvuru sahibi bölümüne kendi adımı mı yazacağım?

Can: Bu alıştırmada başvuru sahibi baban, sen yalnızca formu dolduruyorsun. Babanın adını yaz.

Derya: Tamam. Listemde nüfus kayıt örneği ve vekâletname yazıyor. Bunlar aynı belge mi?

Can: Hayır, iki farklı belge adı. Hangi belgenin istendiğini netleştirelim.

Derya: Bir de asıl ve fotokopi ayrımı var. Konsolosluğa sorarken nasıl söyleyebilirim?

Can: “Burada belgenin aslı mı, fotokopisi mi kastediliyor?” diye sorabilirsin.

Watch out

Being the relative who fills in a form does not make you the person named by every field. In this exercise the father is the applicant, so başvuru sahibi points to him. Also, nüfus kayıt örneği is a document name: do not replace it with fotokopi just because örnek can mean “sample” elsewhere.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the document name using örnek: nüfus kayıt ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    örneği

örneği: this completes the document name. The final k of örnek becomes ğ before the vowel of the possessive ending; bare örnek would leave the compound incomplete.

  2. Supply the word for the original, not the photocopy: belgenin ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    aslı

aslı: the prompt contrasts an original with a photocopy. Asıl loses its second vowel in this form, so the phrase is belgenin aslı.

  3. Father is the applicant; I only fill in the form. Add the possessive form of babam before adını.

    Show answer or example answer

    babamın

babamın: the father is the applicant in the scenario. The ending links him to adını, “his name”; the person doing the writing is a different person.

  4. Choose vekâlet or vekâletname: name the document, not the authority to act.

    Show answer or example answer

    vekâletname

vekâletname: the question asks for the document, not just the authority to act. The document name is written as one word, retaining â.

Use it today

Act out the dialogue with two fictional relatives. On a practice sheet, write the applicant’s name and the document name. Ask one question about whose details belong in a field and another about the original or photocopy; swap roles.
