Watch out

Afiyet olsun does not itself thank someone for cooking. Also, Doydum means “I’m full”, not “I don’t like it”: pair it with thanks to make your refusal clear and friendly.

Try it yourself

  1. Thank the cook using the polite form: Elinize ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    sağlık

sağlık completes Elinize sağlık: you appreciate the cook’s effort, rather than wish the cook a good meal. The form addresses someone as siz.

  2. Wish the person eating an enjoyable meal: Afiyet ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    olsun

olsun completes the set wish Afiyet olsun. Here the other person is eating; you are not commenting on who cooked.

  3. Accept a little more, using almak: Evet, biraz ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    alayım

alayım accepts the offer of a little more. It comes from almak and presents your choice; it does not tell the host to take food.

  4. Decline more: No, thank you. I have eaten enough. Complete with doymak in the past, for ben: Hayır, teşekkür ederim. ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    Doydum

Doydum gives the reason for declining: you have eaten enough. The preceding thanks show appreciation even though you do not want another helping.
