A visit, a workshop or a shared project can be worth waiting for. Use two Turkish expressions to show your enthusiasm, while making clear what you are waiting to do.

The idea

Dört gözle bekliyorum expresses eager anticipation. A specific event takes the accusative: bu sergiyi dört gözle bekliyorum. An action can take the same role: görmeyi dört gözle bekliyorum. With sabırsızlanıyorum, a useful pattern is an infinitive followed by için: görmek için sabırsızlanıyorum. Both describe a feeling now about something still to come; they do not need a future ending.

Watch out

Do not mix the two frames: use buluşmayı dört gözle bekliyorum or buluşmak için sabırsızlanıyorum. Also, sabırsızlanıyorum alone can mean that you are getting impatient. Naming a pleasant plan makes the intended enthusiasm clear; a complaint about a delay points to irritation.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose gözle or göz to complete the expression: I am looking forward to this meeting.

    Show answer or example answer

    gözle

gözle: the fixed expression uses the form meaning “with an eye”; dört gözle belongs together and conveys eagerness, not literal eyesight.

  2. Choose buluşmak or buluşmayı: I am looking forward to meeting up with you.

    Show answer or example answer

    buluşmayı

buluşmayı: meeting you is the action being anticipated. The action noun buluşma takes accusative -yı, giving the object of bekliyorum.

  3. Choose için or ile: I cannot wait to try the new game.

    Show answer or example answer

    için

için: the given word denemek is an infinitive, so this frame connects it with için. The speaker cannot wait to try the new game.

  4. Choose sabırsızlanıyorum or dört gözle bekliyorum. You have been in a queue for half an hour and are losing patience.

    Show answer or example answer

    sabırsızlanıyorum

sabırsızlanıyorum: half an hour in a queue and artık point to patience running out. The speaker is complaining about waiting, not welcoming the wait.

Use it today

Write a message about an upcoming reunion using dört gözle bekliyorum. Rephrase it with için sabırsızlanıyorum, then write a separate complaint about a long wait. Check the verb form before each expression.
