You pass someone repairing a shelf or leave colleagues still at work. Kolay gelsin offers a small sign of support. At this level, focus on what the wish does in the exchange, not just its literal meaning.

The idea

Use kolay gelsin for someone engaged in a task, whether paid work, housework or study. It can open an exchange or accompany your departure while the other person carries on. Gelsin is a third-person imperative used as a wish here: roughly “may it come easily”. The implied subject is the work, not the person addressed, so even hepinize (to all of you) keeps gelsin. Replies include teşekkür ederim, teşekkürler, sağ ol and the polite or plural sağ olun.

Examples

  • Hepinize kolay gelsin.Hope the work goes smoothly for all of you.
  • Kolay gelsin, bu rafı siz mi kuruyorsunuz?Hope the work goes smoothly; are you the one assembling this shelf?
  • Teşekkür ederim, az kaldı.Thank you, nearly done.
  • Sağ olun, işimiz biraz uzun sürecek.Thank you; our work will take quite a while.

Watch out

Do not turn this into kolay gelsiniz to be polite: size kolay gelsin already addresses someone politely or several people. Nor does the phrase mean “your job is easy”. Bu iş kolay makes that claim; the wish acknowledges effort even when a task is difficult.

Try it yourself

  1. A neighbour is painting a door. Write the two-word wish from this lesson to acknowledge their effort.

    Show answer or example answer

    Kolay gelsin

Kolay gelsin: the neighbour is in the middle of painting, so the wish recognises the effort without assessing how difficult painting is.

  2. Address several people assembling a cupboard. Complete Hepinize kolay ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelsin

gelsin: hepinize names the recipients, not a plural subject. More listeners therefore do not change this verb in the fixed wish.

  3. Someone wishes you ease with your work. Give a short thank-you taught in this lesson.

    Show answer or example answer

Teşekkür ederim / Sağ olun / Sağ ol / Teşekkürler

Teşekkür ederim, teşekkürler, sağ ol or sağ olun: thank the person for their kind wish. Use sağ olun for a polite reply or several people; returning the same work wish only fits if they are working too.

  4. State that a job is easy: Bu iş çok ___. Choose kolay or kolay gelsin.

    Show answer or example answer

    kolay

kolay: after çok, the adjective completes a statement about the job’s difficulty. Adding gelsin would turn the intended statement into a wish.

Use it today

Write two short exchanges: greet a neighbour doing a repair, then leave a team still working. Add a suitable thank-you in each. If your browser offers a Turkish voice, listen to the examples and repeat them.
