At the end of a visit or a call, you can wish someone well without arranging another meeting. Practise a warm farewell to a friend, a polite farewell and a reply.

The idea

Say kendine iyi bak to one person you address as sen. Use kendinize iyi bakın for someone you address as siz or for several people; both the reflexive pronoun and the verb change together. These imperative forms express care here, rather than a stern order. Kendine dikkat et can also close a conversation with concern for the other person. To return the wish, say sen de or siz de, or repeat the full farewell after those words.

Watch out

Do not mix kendine with bakın when addressing the same listener: keep the familiar or polite pair together. A bare dikkat et! usually asks someone to be careful or watch out; by itself it is not the same warm goodbye. In sen de, meaning “you too”, de is a separate word.

Try it yourself

  1. Say “take care of yourself” as a farewell to a close friend.

Kendine iyi bak / Kendine dikkat et

Kendine iyi bak / Kendine dikkat et: both can express concern for a friend at parting. The first explicitly wishes them wellbeing; the second can place more emphasis on looking after themselves.

  2. Change kendine iyi bak to address one person politely with siz.

    Show answer or example answer

    Kendinize iyi bakın

Kendinize iyi bakın: the person is addressed politely, so changing only the verb would leave a familiar pronoun in a polite farewell. Keep kendinize and bakın together; bakın has dotless ı.

  3. Fill the gap to return the wish: “You take care of yourself too.”

    Show answer or example answer

    de

de: the listener returns the same wish, so this word means “too”. Joining it to sen would produce sende, meaning “at you / in your possession”, which does not fit this reply.

  4. Warn several people about a slippery road. Complete with the imperative of etmek.

    Show answer or example answer

    edin

edin: the slippery road calls for caution, and the warning addresses several people. The polite/plural imperative of etmek is edin: the t changes to d before the vowel.

Use it today

Write two short farewell exchanges: one with a close friend and one with someone you address politely. Include a return wish in each. Then write a separate warning about a slippery road.
