You will learn what to say in Turkish when someone introduces you, how to answer it, and how to sound polite or warm.

The idea

When someone introduces you, answer Memnun oldum, literally 'I became pleased'; it fits every setting and the other person says it back. It turns warmer with the reason: Tanıştığımıza memnun oldum, 'I am pleased that we met'. The reply is Ben de ('me too'), alone or with memnun oldum. To one person you address as siz, say Sizinle tanıştığıma memnun oldum.

Examples

  • Ben de memnun oldum.Nice to meet you too.Ben de means 'me too'. The small word de is written apart; joined as bende it would mean 'on me' or 'I have it'. The two halves can swap places.
  • Tanıştığımıza memnun oldum, Ayşe Hanım.Nice to meet you, Ayşe Hanım.
  • Ben de tanıştığımıza sevindim.I am glad we met too.
  • Sizi Deniz'le tanıştırayım.Let me introduce you to Deniz.Introducing comes first, then the two people answer memnun oldum. The ending -eyim in tanıştırayım means 'let me'; it is a form beyond A2 that you learn here as part of the phrase.
  • Sizinle tanıştığıma memnun oldum. It is a pleasure to have met you.Siz makes this the polite form. With siz, 'with' is sizinle, like benimle and bizimle. Tanıştığıma means 'that I met'; it is a form beyond A2 that you learn here as part of the phrase.
  • Memnun olduk. We are pleased to meet you.
  • tanıştığımızathat we mettanıştığObject participle: the forms of -dikımız-imiz / -ımız / -umuz / -ümüz: oura-e / -a / -ye / -ya: to, towards

Watch out

Do not use the present: Memnun oluyorum is not the fixed phrase, and Memnunum only says that you are satisfied, not 'nice to meet you'. The meeting has just happened, so Turkish uses the past: memnun oldum. Also write ben de as two words: bende means 'on me'.

Try it yourself

  1. Fill in the small word for 'too': Nice to meet you too. It is written apart.

    Show answer or example answer

    de

de: it means 'too' and is a word of its own, Ben de memnun oldum; joined as bende it would mean 'on me'.

  2. Say 'I am pleased that we met': build the first word from tanış-.

    Show answer or example answer

    tanıştığımıza

tanıştığımıza: tanış- takes the participle -tığ (after ş, a voiceless sound, it starts with t), then -ımız ('we') and the dative -a, because you are pleased 'about' something. The k of -dık becomes ğ before a vowel.

  3. Say 'with you' politely (siz): I am pleased to have met you.

    Show answer or example answer

    sizinle

sizinle: with the polite siz, 'with' is -inle, as in benimle and bizimle.

  4. Finish the fixed phrase for 'nice to meet you' (I became pleased).

    Show answer or example answer

    oldum

oldum: the meeting has just happened, so the past of ol- is used: ol-du-m, 'I became pleased'. Memnunum only says that you are content.
