You may prefer a different design or still be undecided when someone asks for your view. These two expressions introduce what you really think, including an admission or a positive surprise; they are not reserved for complaints.
The idea
Açıkçası frames the whole statement as frank. Dürüst olmak gerekirse introduces the same kind of candour more explicitly: literally, “if it is necessary to be honest”. Learn it as a fixed introduction; it does not mean that honesty is optional. Put either before your opinion. Açıkçası can also appear within the sentence or at the end. Neither expression changes to match the person addressed.
| Expression | Function in this lesson |
|---|---|
| açıkçası | A frank assessment |
| dürüst olmak gerekirse | An explicit introduction to a candid statement |
| açıkça | The manner of speaking: clearly/openly |

Watch out
Do not automatically replace açıkçası with açıkça: in Düşünceni açıkça söyle, the latter describes how to speak, “clearly/openly”. Also, a frank opening does not make a harsh judgment polite. State your own perspective and give a concrete reason or next step, as in the final example.
Try it yourself
Choose açıkçası or açıkça to introduce your frank opinion: this price is too high for me.

Açıkçası
Açıkçası introduces your assessment of the price as a whole. You are not describing the manner of an action, so it is the intended choice here.
Put the three given words in order to introduce an admission: we cannot meet this date.

Dürüst olmak gerekirse
Dürüst olmak gerekirse puts dürüst olmak before gerekirse. The speaker admits that the deadline is unrealistic; the phrase does not ask anyone else to become honest.
Choose açıkça or açıkçası: say what you think clearly; I do not want to misunderstand you.

açıkça
açıkça goes with söyle: the request is to express a thought clearly so the listener does not misunderstand. Açıkçası would instead frame the speaker’s own statement.
