Practise a gift exchange during a bayram visit. You will name the gift, say who it is for and respond politely. The examples describe an imagined family; they do not prescribe what every household gives.
The idea
Bayramlık often refers to clothes for the festival; bayram harçlığı names pocket money given for it, while hediye is the general word for a gift. Name the recipient with sana in Sana küçük bir hediye getirdim. You can also say Bu paket senin için. Use sizin için for several people or one person addressed politely. The recipient can say Hediyeniz için çok teşekkür ederim. The giver can reply Rica ederim.
Examples
- Sana küçük bir hediye getirdim.I brought you a small gift.
- Bu bayramlık gömlek sana çok yakıştı.This shirt for bayram looks very good on you.
- Çocuklara bayram harçlığı verdik. We gave the children pocket money for bayram.
- Bu paket senin için.This package is for you.
- Bu çikolatalar sizin için.These chocolates are for you.
- Hediyeniz için çok teşekkür ederim.Thank you very much for your gift.

Watch out
Do not combine the two recipient patterns as sana için: say sana or senin için. Also, güle güle kullan wishes someone enjoyment of a usable gift, such as a bag; it is not the recipient’s thank-you.
Try it yourself
Complete the expression for pocket money given at bayram, using harçlık.
Show answer or example answer
harçlığı
harçlığı: the compound is bayram harçlığı. Its second noun takes -ı, and the final k in harçlık softens to ğ before that vowel.
You are speaking to one child. Complete “I brought you a small gift” with the form of sen meaning “to you”.
Show answer or example answer
sana
sana: the child is the recipient of what you brought. The dative of sen is sana; seni would make the child the direct object.
The chocolates are for several people. Complete the phrase with the right form of siz.
Show answer or example answer
sizin
sizin: için follows this form of siz. Here several recipients are specified, so senin would wrongly address just one person informally.
You are thanking the giver yourself. Complete the polite thank-you phrase using etmek.
Show answer or example answer
ederim
ederim: the speaker is saying “I thank you”. The ending -im marks that speaker in the fixed expression teşekkür ederim; it does not agree with the giver.
