A dilekçe is a written request or complaint addressed to an authority. At B2, practise separating the situation from the action you want. The reading is an original classroom model with fields to fill in, not an institution’s application form.

The idea

Organise the text around the addressee (muhatap), a brief account of the situation and a specific request (talep). Include the date, name, signature and address; list attachments under Ek or Ekler when there are any. The model also uses Konu for a short subject line. Compare İletişim bilgilerinin güncellenmesi (updating contact details) with İletişim bilgilerimin güncellenmesini arz ederim (I respectfully request that my contact details be updated): the requested action is the object of arz ederim. Keep this closing together at the end of the request. In the fully written institution name, the ending joins without an apostrophe: Çınar Kütüphanesi Müdürlüğüne.

Watch out

Writing only Gereğini arz ederim does not explain what you want done. Name the action first. Do not copy the subject line unchanged into the request: güncellenmesi becomes güncellenmesini here. Everyday rica ederim can be polite, but this petition model uses the formal closing arz ederim.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the subject line using the form of güncellenme: Konu: İletişim bilgilerinin ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    güncellenmesi

güncellenmesi: the subject names a process, “updating”, without a verb that takes it as an object; no final accusative ending is needed.

  2. Complete the request using the form of güncellenme: İletişim bilgilerimin ___ arz ederim.

    Show answer or example answer

    güncellenmesini

güncellenmesini: the whole phrase about updating the details is what the writer requests. The final -ni marks that object after the possessive ending.

  3. Choose the closing used in this petition to an authority: Gereğini ___. (arz ederim / rica ederim)

    Show answer or example answer

    arz ederim

arz ederim: the preceding Gereğini means the action required by the situation already described; this completes the formal closing to the authority.

  4. Which heading names an attached document? Write the singular Turkish word.

    Show answer or example answer

    Ek

Ek: this heading identifies the attached document. A subject line tells the reader what the petition concerns, rather than listing supporting material.

Use it today

Write a classroom petition to a fictional library asking it to update your contact details. Add an addressee, subject, two body sentences, closing, date, name, signature and address fields. Invent the details. List an attachment only if your scenario includes one.
