A neighbourhood market is a semt pazarı. Market days vary by location; the municipal source gives an example of a weekly schedule. Here you will practise a short exchange at a produce stall. All prices in this lesson are invented for practice.

The idea

Kaça? asks a price, not a number of items. Kilosu kaça? makes the unit clear; Toplam ne kadar? asks for the whole purchase. Order with bir kilo domates, lütfen. For a polite discount request, use İndirim yapar mısınız? The question requests a reduction; it does not mean the seller has agreed.

Watch out

Do not treat a price per kilo as the price of the whole bag: two kilos cost twice that amount before any discount. Do not assume bargaining will succeed. In the dialogue, the seller says Maalesef, indirim yok and the buyer accepts the answer.

Try it yourself

  1. Ask the price per kilo: choose kaça or kaç tane.

    Show answer or example answer

    kaça

kaça: the missing information is a price. Kaç tane would ask how many individual items there are, which does not answer the buyer’s question here.

  2. Ask for one kilo of tomatoes: choose kilo or kilolar.

    Show answer or example answer

    kilo

kilo: bir already supplies the quantity, so the measure stays singular. Domates names the produce being weighed; you do not need to count each tomato.

  3. Complete the discount question using polite siz for the seller.

    Show answer or example answer

    mısınız

mısınız: the seller is addressed politely as siz. The last vowel of yapar selects mı, and the polite person ending attaches to the question word, written separately from the verb.

  4. Write the total for two kilos of tomatoes at forty lira per kilo.

    Show answer or example answer

    seksen / 80

seksen (80): two lots of forty lira make eighty. The prompt gives a price per kilo and no discount, so forty would pay for only half the order.

Use it today

Work in pairs. Ask the price per kilo, order one kilo and then ask for a discount. Let the seller refuse politely. Switch roles and buy two kilos, checking the total before ending the exchange.
