Hükûmet means government. You will meet the common spelling hükümet, but this lesson uses hükûmet. All situations below are invented language examples. Read each ending in context rather than treating it as a fixed English preposition.

The idea

The final e determines the endings: hükûmetler, hükûmeti, hükûmetimiz. The stem keeps t before a vowel; location and source give hükûmette and hükûmetten. Compare hükûmeti eleştirmek (criticise the government) with ülkenin hükûmeti (the country’s government): the same -i has different jobs. In hükûmetin açıklaması, -in links the government to its statement; in senin hükûmetin, it marks “your”.

Watch out

Do not automatically change t to d, and do not assume hükûmetin always means “your government”. The following noun in hükûmetin açıklaması shows a genitive relationship. For “our government”, use hükûmetimiz, not a plural ending: one government can represent many people.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: The journalist criticised the government yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    hükûmeti

hükûmeti: the journalist criticises an identified government, so it is a definite object. The accusative adds -i and leaves the stem’s t intact.

  2. Complete: The government’s statement was quite short.

    Show answer or example answer

    hükûmetin

hükûmetin: the statement belongs to the government. The possessive ending on açıklaması pairs with the genitive -in here; no “you” is involved.

  3. Complete: We expect a reply from this government.

    Show answer or example answer

    hükûmetten

hükûmetten: the expected reply comes from the government. The source ending begins with t after the stem’s voiceless t, giving two consecutive letters.

  4. Complete: Our government supports this proposal.

    Show answer or example answer

    hükûmetimiz

hükûmetimiz: bizim identifies the possessors as “we”. The ending -imiz marks our association with a single government; -ler would add plurality.

Use it today

Invent a short report about an imaginary country. Mention its government, a statement from it and your group’s government. Use hükûmetin, hükûmetten and hükûmetimiz, then explain each ending.
