You will build the main forms of kardeş, brother or sister, and choose between -te and -de correctly.
The idea
kardeş means brother or sister and does not say which. Its last vowel e is front, so endings take front shapes: kardeşler, kardeşim, kardeşimiz, kardeşe. Its last sound ş is voiceless, so a bare kardeş takes -te and -ten: kardeşte, kardeşten. To be specific, put erkek (male) or kız (girl) before it: erkek kardeş, kız kardeş.
| Ending | Form | Sound before the ending |
|---|---|---|
| -ler | kardeşler | ş |
| -im | kardeşim | ş |
| -imiz | kardeşimiz | ş |
| -e | kardeşe | ş |
| -te | kardeşte | ş |
| -ten | kardeşten | ş |
| -imde | kardeşimde | m |
| -inde | kardeşinde | n |
Examples
- Benim iki kardeşim var.I have two siblings. After a number the noun stays singular: iki kardeşim. The word also does not say whether the siblings are brothers or sisters.
- Kardeşim şimdi okulda. My sibling is at school now.
- Kardeşime bir hediye aldım.I bought my sibling a present.
- Bu telefonu kardeşimden ödünç aldım.I borrowed this phone from my sibling.
- kardeşlerimizdenfrom our siblingskardeşler-ler / -lar: the plural suffiximiz-imiz / -ımız / -umuz / -ümüz: ourden-den / -dan / -ten / -tan: from, out of
- kardeşimdeat my sibling'skardeşim-im / -ım / -um / -üm / -m: myde-de / -da / -te / -ta: in, at, onThe possessive -im ends in the voiced m, so the locative is -de again, not -te. Bare kardeş would give kardeşte.
- Ali bu hafta kardeşinde kalıyor.Ali is staying at his sibling's this week. The possessive -i is followed by the buffer n before the locative: kardeşinde, never kardeşide. The same form also means 'at your sibling's'.
- Kız kardeşim doktor, erkek kardeşim öğretmen. My sister is a doctor and my brother is a teacher.

Watch out
The common slip is kardeşde or kardeşden: the ş is voiceless, so the ending starts with t. After a possessive ending the sound before it is voiced, and -de is right again: kardeşimde, kardeşinde. After a number kardeş stays singular: iki kardeşim, not iki kardeşlerim.
Try it yourself
Make the plural of kardeş (sibling).
Show answer or example answer
kardeşler
kardeşler: the last vowel e is front, so the plural is -ler; the ş does not change.
Add the ablative to kardeş (sibling): from the sibling.
Show answer or example answer
kardeşten
kardeşten: ş is voiceless, so the ablative starts with t, and the front vowel e gives -ten.
Add 'my' and the dative to kardeş: to my sibling.
Show answer or example answer
kardeşime
kardeşime: -im means 'my' (front vowel), then the dative -e follows; the possessive comes first, the case second.
Write 'my sister' (kız, girl; kardeş, sibling).
Show answer or example answer
kız kardeşim
kız kardeşim: kız ('girl') stands before kardeş as a separate word, and only kardeş takes the ending -im.
