Kimlik can name an ID card in everyday speech, but it also means identity, as in kültürel kimlik (cultural identity). The surrounding words tell you whether someone is discussing a document or who a person or group is. Practise both meanings while keeping track of whose card is being moved or described.

The idea

For this noun, a vowel immediately after the stem changes k to ğ: kimliği, kimliğe, kimliğin, kimliğim. Before a consonant, keep k: kimlikte, kimlikten, kimlikler. The form kimliği has two possible jobs: the specific card as an object, or his/her card as a possessive form. In onun kimliğini, possession comes first; n connects that possessive form to the accusative -i. The table follows this word; the linked suffix lessons explain the wider patterns.

Watch out

Do not treat onun kimliği as a ready-made object just because it ends in i. In Onun kimliğini çekmeceye koyuyorum, the final -i marks what is being put away. Also keep the two dots in mind: kimlik and its endings use dotted i, not dotless ı.

    kimliği

kimliği: the card is identified by its location on the table, so it is a specific object of passing. Add the accusative -i and soften the final k; no owner is stated.

  2. Complete: The photograph on this ID card is very old. Use the locative.

    Show answer or example answer

    kimlikte

kimlikte: the photograph is on the card, so this is a location. The suffix begins with t after voiceless k, which stays because the next sound is a consonant.

  3. Complete: I am putting his or her ID card in the drawer. Keep the possessive and add the accusative.

    Show answer or example answer

    kimliğini

kimliğini: onun supplies the owner. Start from kimliği (his/her card), then add n and the accusative -i because that card is the object of putting.

  4. Complete with “our ID cards” as the object: We carry them in separate pockets.

    Show answer or example answer

    kimliklerimizi

kimliklerimizi: several cards belong to us and are what we carry. The sequence is kimlik + ler + imiz + i; the stem keeps k because the next sound is l.
