Here vize means a travel visa. In fictional situations, you will describe a particular visa, say whose it is and distinguish the visa itself from a visa application. The table brings together the forms of this noun.

The idea

The stem vize stays unchanged and takes front-vowel endings: vizeyi, vizeye, vizede, vizeden, vizenin. Compare vizem (my visa), vizesi (his/her visa) and vizelerimiz (our visas). The compound vize başvurusu means visa application: vize identifies the kind of application, while başvuru takes -su. With a case ending, it becomes vize başvurusunu or vize başvurusuna.

Watch out

Vizeyi marks a particular visa as the direct object; vizesini also preserves “his/her”. In Kardeşim kendi vizesini gösteriyor, replacing it with vizeyi loses the possessive ending. Nor should you reduce the compound vize başvurusu to vize başvuru in an ordinary sentence.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with vize: I am examining this visa carefully.

    Show answer or example answer

    vizeyi

vizeyi: bu points to the particular visa being examined, so the noun is a definite direct object. The joining y separates the final e from accusative -i.

  2. Complete with vize: my brother/sister is showing their own visa.

    Show answer or example answer

    vizesini

vizesini: kardeşim is the owner and kendi reinforces that it is their own visa. Keep -si for possession, then add n and accusative -i because the visa is being shown.

  3. Use vize in the plural: our visas are in our old passports.

    Show answer or example answer

    vizelerimiz

vizelerimiz: bizim identifies us as the owners, and the prompt asks for several visas. Build vize + ler + imiz; vizemiz would refer to a single visa.

  4. Fill the whole gap with “visa application”, combining vize and başvuru.

    Show answer or example answer

    vize başvurusu

vize başvurusu: the gap names the application, not the visa alone. The compound marker belongs on the second noun, and için follows the complete phrase without an additional case ending.

Use it today

Invent a short exchange about an old passport. Use vizeyi once, a possessive form once and vize başvurusu once. Underline the endings and explain whether they identify an object, an owner or a compound.
