Use kütüphane for a library: a place to read or study. You will say where you meet, where you are going and which library you like, then build forms with a possessor.

The idea

The stem kütüphane stays intact; its final e gives kütüphaneler, kütüphaneye and kütüphaneyi. The two earlier ü vowels do not choose the ending. Compare kütüphaneyi (the library as an object) with kütüphanesi (his/her library). In okul kütüphanesi (school library), the second noun also takes -si; a following case uses n: okul kütüphanesinde.

Watch out

Do not replace kütüphaneyi with kütüphanesi just because both end in i. In Bu kütüphaneyi çok seviyorum, the library is what you like; no possessor is named. Keep the internal p unchanged: kütüphaneyi.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: I will go to the library in the afternoon.

    Show answer or example answer

    kütüphaneye

kütüphaneye: the library is the destination of gideceğim. The final e stays, and y joins it to the dative vowel.

  2. Use the plural: The libraries in this city are very big.

    Show answer or example answer

    kütüphaneler

kütüphaneler: several libraries are meant, and no numeral precedes this noun. The plural is -ler after the final e; compare the singular in iki kütüphane.

  3. Complete: I really like this library.

    Show answer or example answer

    kütüphaneyi

kütüphaneyi: bu identifies the library you like, so this object takes the accusative. The y links the stem to -i; -si would introduce possession instead.

  4. Complete: We are studying quietly in the school library.

    Show answer or example answer

    kütüphanesinde

kütüphanesinde: first build okul kütüphanesi, then add the locative through n. The full phrase says where the studying happens, so kütüphaneye would give the wrong relation.

Use it today

Describe an imaginary library in three sentences: go to it, say what you do there, and mention the school library. Circle the case endings and underline the possessive or compound marker.
