Elif accepts a wedding invitation but knows only her friend. Read first for what changes during the afternoon, then for how she behaves at the end. This fictional celebration describes one event, not a rule about village weddings.

The idea

Track the arrival, the rain and the start of the celebration separately. A change of place does not prove a change of time. For the ending, compare the guest waiting at the door with her later actions: an inference about her feelings needs evidence from her behaviour.

Zeynep, kardeşinin köydeki düğününe arkadaşı Elif'i davet etti.

Watch out

Ertelemek means to postpone. Yerini değiştirmek means to change its location here. Neither the guest’s anxious question nor the older man’s question confirms a postponement; check the reply and the stated starting time.

Try it yourself

  1. Who invited Elif to the wedding? Write the name.

    Show answer or example answer

    Zeynep

Zeynep: she invites her friend to her sibling’s wedding in the opening sentence. The invitation comes from her, not from the two women who later offer a seat.

  2. At what time did the wedding start? Use the time expression from the story.

    Show answer or example answer

    saat altıda / altıda

Saat altıda or altıda: the narrator explicitly gives six as the starting time. Three is the arrival time, and half past five is when the wind rises.

  3. Why did everyone move into the hall? Choose: yağmur yüzünden / müzik yüzünden.

    Show answer or example answer

    yağmur yüzünden

Yağmur yüzünden: drops appear on the tablecloth before the move. The empty hall provides shelter; the story does not say that music drives people inside.

  4. Which interpretation does the final paragraph support? Choose: rahatladı / daha çok endişelendi.

    Show answer or example answer

    rahatladı

Rahatladı: she smiles, starts chatting and says she will come early next time too. Together these actions suggest that she feels at ease, although the final paragraph does not name that feeling.

Use it today

Retell the afternoon in four Turkish sentences. Include the three times, explain the move indoors, and use two details from the final paragraph to support your interpretation of the guest’s feelings.
