You will build the present continuous of a verb, choose one of its four vowels and add the person ending: geliyorum, bekliyorsun.

The idea

Add -iyor to the verb stem; its vowel is i, ı, u or ü according to the last vowel of the stem: geliyor, alıyor, buluyor, görüyor. The person ending follows: geliyorum, geliyorsun, geliyor, geliyoruz, geliyorsunuz, geliyorlar. A stem that ends in a or e loses that vowel first, and the new vowel follows the vowel before it: bekle- gives bekliyor, başla- gives başlıyor, oyna- gives oynuyor. After any other vowel only -yor is added: okuyor, yürüyor. In git- and et- the t becomes d: gidiyor, ediyor.

Watch out

Do not keep the last vowel of the stem: bekleyor and başlayor are wrong. The e or a drops out and you say bekliyor, başlıyor. The new vowel follows the vowel before the one that dropped, which is why it is oynuyor, not oynıyor.

Try it yourself

  1. Say 'he/she is waiting' with beklemek (to wait). The stem is bekle-.

    bekliyor

bekliyor: the final e of bekle- drops out, and the vowel before it, e, gives i: bekl- + -iyor.

  2. Say 'he/she is playing' with oynamak (to play). The stem is oyna-.

    Show answer or example answer

    oynuyor

oynuyor: the a drops out, the vowel before it is o, a rounded back vowel, so u is used and not ı.

  3. Say 'we are going' with gitmek (to go). The stem is git-.

    Show answer or example answer

    gidiyoruz

gidiyoruz: git- becomes gid- before a vowel, i gives -iyor, and -uz is the ending for biz (we).

  4. Say 'I am starting' with başlamak (to start). The stem is başla-.

    Show answer or example answer

    başlıyorum

başlıyorum: the a drops out, the vowel before it is the unrounded back vowel a, so ı, and -um stands for ben (I).
