Use azaltmak to say that someone or something makes an amount, duration or intensity smaller. The table uses “I”; the examples also show a team acting and a system causing a reduction.

The idea

Azaltmak takes an object: bekleme süresini azaltmak means to shorten the waiting time. The stem keeps its t: azaltıyorum, azaltırım, but the past has two: azalttım. Compare azaltacağım with azaltacak mıyım?: the future ending softens before the vowel in the attached person ending. For quantities, on dakika gives the amount removed; beşten ikiye gives the starting and final numbers.

Watch out

Do not use azalmak with the thing being reduced as an object: bekleme süresi azalıyor says the waiting time is decreasing, while sistem bekleme süresini azaltıyor names its cause. Also, reducing a duration by ten minutes does not mean reducing it to ten minutes.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the past of azaltmak for “we”: yesterday we shortened the meeting by ten minutes.

    Show answer or example answer

    azalttık

azalttık: the reduction happened yesterday and “we” did it. The final t takes the past ending -tı, followed by -k for the subject; ten minutes is the amount removed.

  2. Choose the verb: the new system is reducing the waiting time.

    Show answer or example answer

    azaltıyor

azaltıyor: the system causes the change, and bekleme süresini is its object. With azalıyor, the waiting time itself would have to be the subject: bekleme süresi azalıyor.

  3. Complete with the final number: we reduced the number of meetings from five to two.

    Show answer or example answer

    ikiye

ikiye: two is the final number, so iki takes the dative with a linking y. There are two meetings left; three were removed.

  4. Use the future of azaltmak for “I”: tomorrow I will reduce my screen time.

    Show answer or example answer

    azaltacağım

azaltacağım: the plan is for tomorrow and the subject is “I”. The future -acak becomes -acağ- before -ım; the t in the stem remains unchanged.

Use it today

Write two sentences about changing a meeting schedule: one with the starting and final numbers, one with the minutes saved. Then describe the resulting decrease with azalmak and continue to artmak for the opposite direction.
