Use atmak to describe throwing an object, discarding something and sending a message in everyday conversation. The table gives its main forms; the examples show how the object and destination shape the meaning.

The idea

The stem is at-: its t stays in atıyorum and atacağım. The past is attım, and the aorist is atarım. A definite object takes the accusative, as in topu; a destination or recipient takes the dative, as in bana. Çöpe atmak means to discard, while conversational mesaj atmak means to send a message. The table uses plural endings with onlar; singular verb forms can also accompany this pronoun.

Watch out

Do not translate every use as a physical throw. Sana mesaj atacağım promises a message; Telefonu atacağım says you will throw or discard the phone itself. For neutral wording about sending, use göndermek.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the past form of atmak for “I”: I threw the old tickets away yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    attım

attım: dün places the completed action yesterday. The stem ends in voiceless t, so the past adds -tı; final -m identifies the speaker. Both letters in tt belong here.

  2. Use the future of atmak for “I”: tomorrow I will send you a message.

    Show answer or example answer

    atacağım

atacağım: yarın and the requested future form call for -acak. Its k becomes ğ before the vowel of -ım. The object is a message, so this is sending, not throwing.

  3. Make a request with the aorist of atmak, addressing one person as sen.

    Show answer or example answer

    atar mısın

atar mısın: the request uses the aorist atar. The question particle is written separately, and the ending for sen attaches to it: mısın.

  4. Use the negative present continuous of atmak for “I”: I am not throwing the old notebooks away.

    Show answer or example answer

    atmıyorum

atmıyorum: the speaker is denying an action in progress. Insert negative -mı- before -yor, then add -um for “I”; the old notebooks are being kept.

Use it today

Write one sentence about a ball, one about something you will keep rather than discard, and one about a message you will send. Change the tense in each and identify any recipient.
