Use göndermek for sending digital files, messages and physical parcels. You will name the recipient, distinguish a habit from an action in progress, and ask someone politely to send something again.

The idea

The stem gönder- stays unchanged: gönderiyorum, gönderdim, gönderirim. Its last vowel is e, so the present is gönderiyorum, not gönderüyorum. In göndereceğim and göndereceğiz, the future ending’s k becomes ğ. A specific item takes the accusative and its recipient the dative: dosyayı sana göndermek. An unspecified object can stay unmarked: fotoğraf göndermek. Useful negatives are göndermiyorum (I am not sending) and göndermedim (I did not send). The table gives plural forms with onlar; with an explicit plural subject, the verb can also lack -lar/-ler.

Watch out

Sana gönderdim means “I sent it to you”; seni gönderdim means “I sent you”, with you as the person sent. Also, göndermek does not say that the sender carries the item personally. If you take the parcel there yourself, paketi götürmek expresses that action.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “I am sending”: Şu anda sana dosyayı ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    gönderiyorum

gönderiyorum: şu anda places the action in progress, and the sender is “I”. The i after the stem follows its final e; -um agrees with the o in the tense ending.

  2. Complete with “we will send”: Yarın bu paketi ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    göndereceğiz

göndereceğiz: the prompt asks for a future action by “we”, so the person ending is -iz. Because it begins with a vowel, the final k of gönderecek softens to ğ.

  3. Write “to you” (one familiar person): Fotoğrafı ___ gönderdim.

    Show answer or example answer

    sana

sana: the photo is the thing sent, and “you” are its recipient. The dative of sen is sana, not sene; seni would make you the person being sent.

  4. Complete the polite request to someone addressed as siz: Adresi tekrar ___?

    Show answer or example answer

    gönderir misiniz

gönderir misiniz: the aorist question makes this a polite request rather than a statement. Write mi separately from the verb and attach -siniz to it; gönderirsiniz alone means “you send”.

Use it today

Write a message saying what you will send and to whom. Add one sentence about what you have not sent yet and one polite request. Then study getirmek to compare sending an item with bringing it.
