Bağırmak describes a loud voice: someone may be angry, excited or simply trying to be heard. Learn to identify the recipient and separate the volume of a voice from the speaker’s intention.

The idea

Use a dative for the person you shout at: bana bağırmak, sana bağırmak. The stem bağır- keeps its dotless ı: bağırıyorum, bağırdım, bağırırım. In bağıracağım, the future suffix changes its final k to ğ before the personal ending. Compare bağırarak konuşmak (to talk by shouting) with bağırmadan konuşmak (to talk without shouting).

Watch out

Seni bağırıyorum is not the pattern for “I am shouting at you”; use sana bağırıyorum. Do not assume every instance of shouting is an angry attack: heyecandan gives excitement as the cause, and noise may make a louder voice necessary. The first-person negative aorist is bağırmam, not bağırmazım.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the dative of sen: I am not shouting at you.

    Show answer or example answer

    sana

sana: the missing word identifies the person addressed, not a direct object. The dative of sen is sana; seni would be accusative.

  2. Use bağırmak in the first-person singular aorist: I usually shout at matches.

    Show answer or example answer

    bağırırım

bağırırım: genellikle places the action in a repeated situation. The requested aorist combines bağırır with -ım, preserving the dotless vowels.

  3. Use the first-person singular future of bağırmak: if they do not hear, I will shout louder.

    Show answer or example answer

    bağıracağım

bağıracağım: not being heard is a possible future condition. The speaker’s next action takes the future, and bağıracak + -ım becomes bağıracağım through k → ğ.

  4. Form “without shouting” from bağırmak: we can also understand each other without shouting.

    bağırmadan

bağırmadan: the sentence presents understanding as possible in the absence of shouting. Bağırarak would instead make shouting the way they communicate; the separate da adds “also”.

Use it today

Write two short situations: an excited crowd and a disagreement resolved without shouting. Include a recipient in the dative, a future form, and bağırmadan. Make the reason for the loud voice clear.
