Uğraşmak puts the time or effort spent on something in the foreground. It can describe a hobby, a troublesome task or an attempt; it does not by itself say that the attempt succeeded.
The idea
Name the thing you are occupied with using ile: seramikle uğraşmak, doing pottery. Name an action you are trying to achieve with -maya/-meye: kilidi açmaya uğraşmak, trying hard to open the lock. The stem stays uğraş-; compare uğraşıyorum, uğraştım, uğraşacağım and habitual uğraşırım. The table includes negative ongoing actions; with onlar, forms without the plural ending are also possible.
| Subject | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist | Negative present continuous |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | uğraşıyorum | uğraştım | uğraşacağım | uğraşırım | uğraşmıyorum |
| sen | uğraşıyorsun | uğraştın | uğraşacaksın | uğraşırsın | uğraşmıyorsun |
| o | uğraşıyor | uğraştı | uğraşacak | uğraşır | uğraşmıyor |
| biz | uğraşıyoruz | uğraştık | uğraşacağız | uğraşırız | uğraşmıyoruz |
| siz | uğraşıyorsunuz | uğraştınız | uğraşacaksınız | uğraşırsınız | uğraşmıyorsunuz |

Do not give uğraşmak a direct object: say sorunla uğraşmak. In sorunu çözmeye uğraşmak, sorunu belongs to çözmek. With a person, context matters: Benimle uğraşma is usually “Stop bothering me”, not an invitation to cooperate.
