You will conjugate başlamak in three tenses and say what you begin, with a noun or with another verb.
The idea
What you begin takes the dative: derse başlamak, işe başlamak. Before another verb, turn that verb into a noun with -me/-ma and add the dative: okumak becomes okumaya başlamak. The stem başla- ends in a vowel: başlıyorum (the final a drops), başladım, başlayacağım. With no object the verb says that something starts: ders başladı.
| Person | Present | Past | Future |
|---|---|---|---|
| ben | başlıyorum | başladım | başlayacağım |
| sen | başlıyorsun | başladın | başlayacaksın |
| o | başlıyor | başladı | başlayacak |
| biz | başlıyoruz | başladık | başlayacağız |
| siz | başlıyorsunuz | başladınız | başlayacaksınız |
| onlar | başlıyorlar | başladılar | başlayacaklar |
Examples
- Ders saat dokuzda başlıyor. The lesson starts at nine o'clock.Başlamak needs no object when something begins by itself. The final a of başla- drops before -ıyor: başlıyor, not başlayor.
- Yarın yeni işe başlıyorum.I am starting a new job tomorrow. What you begin takes the dative: işe, not işi. The subject ben is already in the ending -um, so it is left out.
- Çocuk yürümeye başladı.The child started to walk. Before başlamak a verb becomes a noun with -me/-ma and takes the dative: yürümeye, not yürümek.
- Kitap okumaya başladım.I started reading a book.
- Yağmur yağmaya başladı.It started to rain.
- Film yarım saat sonra başlayacak. The film will start in half an hour. The stem ends in a vowel, so the future gets a buffer y: başlayacak. Before a vowel the k turns into ğ: başlayacağım.

Watch out
Do not put the accusative or the infinitive before başlamak: dersi başladım and okumak başladım are wrong, the forms are derse başladım and okumaya başladım. Do not keep the a in the present either: başlıyorum, never başlayorum.
Try it yourself
Add the dative to ders (lesson): we start the lesson.
Show answer or example answer
derse
derse: the last vowel of ders is e, a front vowel, so the dative is -e, and what you begin takes the dative.
Make okumak (to read) fit before başlamak: I started reading the book.
Show answer or example answer
okumaya
okumaya: -ma turns the verb into a noun (the last vowel u is back), and after that vowel the dative needs a buffer y, giving -ya.
Fill in the present continuous: you (plural) are starting now.

başlıyorsunuz
başlıyorsunuz: the final a of başla- drops before -ıyor, and -sunuz marks siz.
Fill in the future: I will start tomorrow.

başlayacağım
başlayacağım: the stem ends in a vowel, so a buffer y comes before -acak, and the k turns into ğ before the vowel of -ım.
