You will say what people are doing and did with yapmak, and learn everyday pairings such as ödev yapmak and spor yapmak.

The idea

The stem yap- ends in the voiceless p, so the past ending is hard: yap + tı = yaptı, yaptım, yaptık. The present continuous puts -ıyor after the stem: yapıyorum, yapıyorsun, yapıyor. With a noun, yapmak covers many everyday activities where English says have, go or play: kahvaltı yapmak (have breakfast), alışveriş yapmak (go shopping), spor yapmak (do sport).

Examples

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not write yapdım: after the voiceless p the past ending is -tı, so yaptım. And the p of a verb stem never softens the way it does in kitap → kitabı: it is yapıyor, not yabıyor.

Try it yourself

  1. Write yapmak in the past tense for I: Yesterday I did homework.

    Show answer or example answer

    yaptım

yaptım: the stem ends in the voiceless p, so the ending is -tı, and -m marks "I".

  2. Write yapmak in the present with -ıyor for we: We are doing sport now.

    Show answer or example answer

    yapıyoruz

yapıyoruz: the last stem vowel a is back and unrounded, so ı goes before yor; after the rounded o, "we" is -uz.

  3. Write yapmak in the past tense for they: They had breakfast this morning.

    Show answer or example answer

    yaptılar

yaptılar: -tı because of the voiceless p, then -lar because the last vowel ı is back.

  4. Write yapmak in the present with -ıyor for you (singular): What are you doing now?

    Show answer or example answer

    yapıyorsun

yapıyorsun: after -ıyor, "you" takes -sun, because the vowel o is back and rounded.
