A job application and a dictionary lookup can both use başvurmak. You will identify what someone applies for or turns to, state the purpose separately, and distinguish an application from its outcome.

The idea

Write başvurmak as one word. The target takes the dative: bir işe başvurmak means to apply for a job; bir şirkete başvurmak names the company approached. A purpose can be added with için: yardım için danışmana başvurmak. With a resource or method, the verb means to consult or resort to it: sözlüğe başvurmak, bir yönteme başvurmak. The stem stays başvur-; note başvururum for a habit and başvuracağım for the future, where the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the personal ending.

Watch out

Do not make the target a direct object: use bu işe başvurmak, not bu işi başvurmak. Nor does başvurdum mean that an application succeeded: kabul edildim says that you were accepted. Translate the whole expression in context; a dictionary cannot receive a job application.

Try it yourself

  1. Bu ___ başvuruyorum. Complete the noun: I am applying for this job. Use iş in the dative.

    Show answer or example answer

    işe

işe: the vacancy is what the application concerns. The last vowel of iş is front, so the dative is -e. The accusative işi would wrongly treat it as a direct object here.

  2. Yardım ___ danışmana başvurduk. Fill the purpose word: we turned to the adviser for help.

    Show answer or example answer

    için

için: help is the purpose, while danışmana already names the person approached. The sentence needs “for help”, not a second recipient.

  3. Yarın bu atölyeye ___. Complete with başvurmak, first-person singular future: I will apply for this workshop tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    başvuracağım

başvuracağım: the prompt asks for the future with ben. Before the vowel of the personal ending, the future form’s k softens to ğ; başvuracakım is not the written form.

  4. Bilmediğim bir kelime olunca sözlüğe ___. Use başvurmak in the first-person singular aorist for a habit: I consult the dictionary.

    Show answer or example answer

    başvururum

başvururum: consulting the dictionary happens whenever an unknown word occurs, so the aorist expresses the repeated response. Başvurdum would describe a past event instead.

Use it today

Write a short account with one past application, one future application and one resource you habitually consult. Mark each dative target, add one purpose with için, and leave the outcome open unless you state it separately.
