Use birleşmek for things that come together or people who unite. At B2, extend the physical meaning to a shared goal or opinion, then distinguish it from joining things yourself.
The idea
With birleşmek, the subject is what comes together; the verb takes no direct object. Name the other participant with ile: diğer ekiple birleşmek. Use bir amaç etrafında birleşmek for uniting around a goal and aynı görüşte birleşmek for agreeing on a view. The stem keeps its ş: birleşiyor, birleşir, birleşti. In birleşeceğiz, the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the personal ending.

Watch out
English “join” can hide the difference: İki parça birleşti means the pieces came together; Usta iki parçayı birleştirdi means the craftsperson joined them. Do not give birleşmek the object iki parçayı. A shared opinion also does not imply that people physically meet.

birleştirdi: the craftsperson acts on the two pieces, marked by parçayı. The pieces are the object, so the sentence needs the verb for causing them to come together.
