Ayrılmak describes leaving, parting or becoming separate. The table contrasts “I” and “we”. Read the surrounding sentence before translating: işten ayrılmak can describe leaving a job, while a time-of-day context can describe leaving the workplace.
The idea
For the place, person or group left behind, use the ablative: salondan ayrılmak, ekipten ayrılmak, sevgilisinden ayrılmak. The subject is the one who leaves; there is no direct object. In ikiye ayrılmak, the dative instead names the result: splitting into two. Conjugate the stem ayrıl- as in ayrılıyorum and ayrılırım.
| Form | I | We |
|---|---|---|
| Present continuous | ayrılıyorum | ayrılıyoruz |
| Aorist / habitual | ayrılırım | ayrılırız |
| Past | ayrıldım | ayrıldık |
| Future | ayrılacağım | ayrılacağız |
| Negative continuous | ayrılmıyorum | ayrılmıyoruz |
| Negative past | ayrılmadım | ayrılmadık |
| Past question | ayrıldım mı? | ayrıldık mı? |
| Negative future | ayrılmayacağım | ayrılmayacağız |

Watch out
Do not confuse ayrıldım (I left / parted) with ayırdım (I separated something). In çamaşırları ayırdım, the laundry is the direct object. Also, işten ayrıldı alone does not tell you whether someone resigned, retired or left for another reason.
Try it yourself
Complete with “the team”: I left the team last week.

ekipten
ekipten: the team is the group left behind. Its final p gives -ten; it stays p because the suffix begins with a consonant.
Use the future for “I”: I will leave the town tomorrow.
Show answer or example answer
ayrılacağım
ayrılacağım: tomorrow puts the departure in the future and “I” selects the singular ending. The k of -acak becomes ğ before the vowel in -ım.
Ask in the past with “we”: did we leave the room early? Include the question particle.
Show answer or example answer
ayrıldık mı
ayrıldık mı: the departure is a completed event involving “we”, so the person ending is already on ayrıldık. The separate question particle follows and takes ı.
Choose the verb for sorting the coloured laundry from the whites; use the past for “I”.
Show answer or example answer
ayırdım
ayırdım: the speaker sorted the laundry rather than leaving it. The named object renkli çamaşırları calls for ayırmak; past -dı and final -m identify the speaker’s action.
