Dayanmak connects physical support, endurance and the basis of an argument. Read the complement to decide whether someone leans, something withstands pressure, or a claim rests on evidence.

The idea

In these three uses, the complement takes the dative: kapıya dayanmak (lean against the door), sıcağa dayanmak (withstand heat), verilere dayanmak (be based on data). The stem is dayan-; compare dayanıyorum, dayanırım, dayandım and dayanacağım. Without a complement, the verb can mean “last”: yıllarca dayandı.

Watch out

English “endure something” can tempt you to use the accusative. Say gürültüye dayanmak, not gürültüyü dayanmak. For “I cannot stand it”, use dayanamıyorum: dayanmıyorum only negates the action and does not itself express inability.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the correct form of sıcak: this fabric withstands heat.

    Show answer or example answer

    sıcağa

sıcağa: heat is what the fabric resists, so it needs the dative. The final k of sıcak becomes ğ before -a; sıcağı would be accusative.

  2. Use the past of dayanmak with “we”: yesterday we endured this noise for two hours.

    Show answer or example answer

    dayandık

dayandık: yesterday locates the endurance in the past. After n, the past ending begins with d; -dı carries the back vowel, and final -k identifies “we”.

  3. Use dayanmak to say “I cannot stand it any longer”, in the present continuous.

    Show answer or example answer

    dayanamıyorum

dayanamıyorum: the speaker has reached a limit. The inability form has -ama-; before -ıyor, its final vowel drops, giving dayanamıyorum rather than simple negative dayanmıyorum.

  4. Use the future of dayanmak with “I”: tomorrow I will endure the long journey.

    Show answer or example answer

    dayanacağım

dayanacağım: the speaker predicts their own endurance tomorrow. The k of future -acak softens to ğ before the first-person ending -ım; the stem dayan- stays unchanged.

Write a sentence about a material resisting heat, one about leaning against something, and one about an opinion based on observations. Then practise the forms of çözmek.
