Engellemek describes an obstacle to a person, a passage or an action. You will name what is blocked and say whose action cannot proceed, including blocking messages in an app.

The idea

A specific object takes the accusative: girişi engellemek. An action uses a verbal noun with a possessive ending and the accusative: çalış-ma-m-ı means “my working” as an object; trenlerin ilerlemesini means “the trains’ moving forward” as an object. The stem engelle- gives engelliyorum, but engelledim and engelleyeceğim retain its final e. The aorist engeller describes a usual function; the table shows explicit plural forms for onlar, though singular verb forms are also possible with a plural subject.

Watch out

Do not transfer the dative of engel olmak to engellemek: say seni engellemek, but sana engel olmak. Both can mean hindering you. An action is affirmative inside çalışmamı engelliyor: the obstacle is what prevents the work, so do not add a negative ending to “work”.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: I am blocking this number right now. Use the present continuous.

    Show answer or example answer

    engelliyorum

engelliyorum: the speaker is doing this now, so use the continuous form with the first-person ending. The final e of engelle- narrows to i before -yor.

  2. Complete: We will block these accounts tomorrow. Use the future tense.

    Show answer or example answer

    engelleyeceğiz

engelleyeceğiz: tomorrow places the blocking in the future and “we” requires the plural ending. The linking y follows the vowel-final stem; the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the person ending.

  3. Complete with one word: This noise prevents me from working. Turn çalışmak into “my working” and mark it as the object.

    Show answer or example answer

    çalışmamı

çalışmamı: çalışma names the action, the next m identifies me as its performer, and final ı marks the whole action as the object of the obstruction.

  4. Complete: I am not stopping you. Put sen in the case required by engellemek.

    Show answer or example answer

    seni

seni: you are the person being stopped, the direct object. Sana would fit the different expression engel olmak, not this sentence.
