With güvenmek, you say that you consider a person or a thing reliable. You can trust a teammate, rely on a clock, or have confidence in yourself. The table gives the affirmative forms.
The idea
The person or thing trusted takes the dative: sana, ekibimize, bu saate. For self-confidence, use kendime güveniyorum. The stem güven- keeps its final consonant; its last vowel is e, so write güveniyorum and güvendim. The aorist güvenirim can express a general attitude. The future is güveneceğim. Useful negatives are güvenmiyorum, güvenmedim and güvenmem. Keep the question separate: güveniyor musunuz?
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | güveniyorum | güvendim | güveneceğim | güvenirim |
| sen | güveniyorsun | güvendin | güveneceksin | güvenirsin |
| o | güveniyor | güvendi | güvenecek | güvenir |
| biz | güveniyoruz | güvendik | güveneceğiz | güveniriz |
| siz | güveniyorsunuz | güvendiniz | güveneceksiniz | güvenirsiniz |
| onlar | güveniyorlar | güvendiler | güvenecekler | güvenirler |

Watch out
English “trust you” has a direct object, but Turkish requires sana güveniyorum, not seni güveniyorum. Also, sana inanıyorum can mean “I believe what you say”; sana güveniyorum expresses confidence in your reliability. The meanings may overlap, but the verbs are not interchangeable in every context.
