Use tanımak for personal familiarity and recognition. You will describe people you know, recognise someone by their voice and ask whether a face is familiar.
The idea
Tanıyorum can mean “I know”, even though it has the present continuous form. With a specific person or place, use the accusative: seni, komşularımı, bu mahalleyi. A clue to recognition can take -den: sesinden. The stem is tanı-; compare tanıyorum, tanıdım, tanıyacağım and tanırım. The negative is tanımıyorum; the question is tanıyor musun?. Subject pronouns may be omitted.
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | tanıyorum | tanıdım | tanıyacağım | tanırım |
| sen | tanıyorsun | tanıdın | tanıyacaksın | tanırsın |
| o | tanıyor | tanıdı | tanıyacak | tanır |
| biz | tanıyoruz | tanıdık | tanıyacağız | tanırız |
| siz | tanıyorsunuz | tanıdınız | tanıyacaksınız | tanırsınız |
| onlar | tanıyorlar | tanıdılar | tanıyacaklar | tanırlar |

Watch out
Knowing a name does not mean knowing the person: Adını biliyorum ama onu tanımıyorum. Use bilmek for the name as information and tanımak for personal familiarity here. Keep the dotless ı in tanı-; the future needs y, and k becomes ğ in tanıyacağım.
Try it yourself
Complete in the past, first person singular: recognising someone by their voice yesterday.

tanıdım
tanıdım: dün places the recognition yesterday, and ben requires the first-person ending -m. The voice is the clue, not the person being recognised.
Use the negative present continuous: we do not know this person.

tanımıyoruz
tanımıyoruz: the sentence says that we do not know this person. The negative form contains mı before yor, while -uz marks “we”.
Use the future: I will recognise you immediately tomorrow.

tanıyacağım
tanıyacağım: yarın calls for the requested future form. Between the vowel-final stem and the future ending comes y; the ending’s k softens before the first-person vowel.
Choose the form meaning “I do not know this person personally”, although I know their name.

tanımıyorum
tanımıyorum: the speaker knows the name but is not personally acquainted with the person. Bilmiyorum would not express that contrast clearly here.
