Use karıştırmak when someone stirs or mixes something, or mistakes one thing for another. The same verb connects a cooking action with an everyday mix-up; the surrounding nouns tell you which meaning fits.

The idea

The stem karıştır- stays intact: karıştırıyorum, karıştırdım, karıştıracağım, karıştırırım. Notice the two final r sounds in karıştırır. A specific object takes the accusative: çorbayı karıştırmak. To name what you confuse it with, use ile or its attached form: tuzu şekerle karıştırmak. The future has ğ in karıştıracağım and karıştıracağız. For requests, use karıştır, polite or plural karıştırın, and negative karıştırma.

Watch out

Do not drop -tır- when someone mixes an object. Boyaları karıştırdım means “I mixed the paints”; Boyalar karıştı says “The paints got mixed”. The second sentence makes the paints the subject and does not name who mixed them. Likewise, karıştırmıyorum means “I am not mixing”, while karışmıyorum is a form of a different verb.

Try it yourself

  1. Use “I am stirring” in the present continuous: Şimdi çorbayı ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    karıştırıyorum

karıştırıyorum: the action is happening now, and the speaker is “I”. The stem’s last vowel gives -ıyor-; final -um matches the rounded vowel in that ending.

  2. Use “we will mix” in the future: Yarın boyaları ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    karıştıracağız

karıştıracağız: tomorrow calls for the future, and the subject is “we”. The future’s k changes to ğ before the vowel of -ız. Karıştıracağım would name just the speaker.

  3. Add “with sugar”, using şeker and ile: Tuzu ___ karıştırma.

    Show answer or example answer

    şekerle / şeker ile

şekerle / şeker ile: sugar is the thing the salt is being confused with, so use “with”. Both the attached and separate forms work; şekeri would make sugar another direct object.

  4. Choose karıştı or karıştırdı: the colours got mixed together. Renkler birbirine ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    karıştı

karıştı: the colours themselves got mixed. No person is named as mixing an object, so choose the verb karışmak; karıştırdı would make the colours do the mixing.

Use it today

Describe stirring soup now and mixing paints tomorrow. Then write a warning about confusing two ingredients. Identify the object in each sentence and compare it with a sentence about colours getting mixed.
