You will conjugate öğrenmek in the present, past and future and say what you learn and from whom.
The idea
The stem öğren- ends in n and its last vowel is e, so the endings are the plain ones: öğreniyorum, öğrendim, öğreneceğim. The rounded ö in the first syllable does not matter, because only the last vowel of the stem chooses the ending. The past starts with d after the voiced n, and the k of -ecek softens to ğ before a vowel. What you learn is the object (Türkçe, yüzmeyi), and the person or source you learn from takes -den: dedemden.
| Person | Present (-iyor) | Past (-di) | Negative past (-medi) | Future (-ecek) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | öğreniyorum | öğrendim | öğrenmedim | öğreneceğim |
| sen | öğreniyorsun | öğrendin | öğrenmedin | öğreneceksin |
| o | öğreniyor | öğrendi | öğrenmedi | öğrenecek |
| biz | öğreniyoruz | öğrendik | öğrenmedik | öğreneceğiz |
| siz | öğreniyorsunuz | öğrendiniz | öğrenmediniz | öğreneceksiniz |
| onlar | öğreniyorlar | öğrendiler | öğrenmediler | öğrenecekler |
Examples
- Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum.I am learning Turkish.
- Dün yeni bir şarkı öğrendim.I learned a new song yesterday.
- Yüzmeyi dedemden öğrendim.I learned to swim from my grandfather.Yüzmeyi is yüzmek turned into a noun with -me and put in the accusative; this goes a little beyond A2. The teacher or source takes -den: dedemden.
- Sınav sonucunu yarın öğreneceğiz.We will find out the exam result tomorrow.Öğrenmek also means to find out: with a skill it means learn, with news or a result it means find out. Sonuç becomes sonucunu: the ç softens to c before a vowel.
- Çocuklar çok çabuk öğreniyor.Children learn very quickly.A plural subject usually keeps a singular verb: öğreniyor. The form öğreniyorlar is also correct.

Watch out
Do not mix up öğrenmek, to learn, with öğretmek, to teach: Ben sana Türkçe öğreniyorum does not mean that you teach, and the right verb is öğretiyorum. Do not round the ending either: öğrenüyorum and öğrentim are wrong.
Try it yourself
Give the present-tense form for ben (I): am learning.
Show answer or example answer
öğreniyorum
öğreniyorum: the last vowel of öğren- is e, so the ending is -iyor, not -üyor, and -um marks ben.
Give the negative past form for o (he, she, it): did not learn.
Show answer or example answer
öğrenmedi
öğrenmedi: the negative -me sits between the stem and -di, and o takes no person ending.
Add the suffix: I learned to swim from my grandfather.
Show answer or example answer
dedemden
dedemden: the source of learning takes the ablative; m is voiced and the last vowel e is front, so -den.
Say: I am teaching you Turkish. Use öğretmek (to teach) in the present tense.
Show answer or example answer
öğretiyorum
öğretiyorum: teaching adds a t to the stem (öğret-), the vowel e gives -iyor, and -um marks ben.
