You will conjugate öğretmek in the present, past and future and keep it apart from öğrenmek.

The idea

Öğretmek needs a person who learns and a thing taught: the learner takes -e/-a (bana, çocuklara), and the subject or language stays bare (Türkçe) or takes the accusative when it is known (oyunu). The stem öğret- ends in t, so the past ending -ti gives a double t: öğrettim. The future -ecek softens its k to ğ before a vowel: öğreteceğim, but öğretecek.

Examples

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not swap it with öğrenmek: Türkçe öğretiyorum says that you teach Turkish, and a learner needs Türkçe öğreniyorum. Keep the noun apart from the verb as well: öğretmen is the person, öğretmek the action.

Try it yourself

  1. Conjugate öğretmek for ben in the present continuous (-iyor): I am teaching.

    Show answer or example answer

    öğretiyorum

öğretiyorum: the stem öğret- ends in a consonant, its last vowel e is front so the ending is -iyor, and -um marks ben.

  2. Conjugate öğretmek for ben in the past (-di): I taught.

    Show answer or example answer

    öğrettim

öğrettim: the stem ends in t and the past ending -ti also starts with t, so two t are written; -m marks ben.

  3. Conjugate öğretmek for ben in the future (-ecek): I will teach.

    Show answer or example answer

    öğreteceğim

öğreteceğim: the front vowel gives -ecek, and its k becomes ğ before the vowel of -im.

  4. Fill in the pronoun: Ali is teaching me German.

    Show answer or example answer

    bana

bana: the learner takes the dative, and the dative of ben is irregular: bana, not bene.
