With saklamak, you can keep something for later or put it out of sight. The object and the surrounding sentence tell you which meaning fits. You will also name the person who is kept in the dark.

The idea

Saklamak takes an object: mektupları saklamak can mean keeping the letters, while hediyeyi senden saklamak means hiding the gift from you. The person it is hidden from takes the ablative: senden, bizden. Compare the forms saklıyorum, sakladım, saklayacağım and saklarım. The final vowel of sakla- narrows before -yor; the future retains it and adds y.

Watch out

Do not use saklamak alone to mean hiding yourself: Çocuk oyuncağı sakladı says that the child hid the toy; Çocuk saklandı says that the child hid. Nor does keeping letters necessarily imply secrecy: saklamak can simply mean not throwing them away.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the present continuous of saklamak for “I”: I keep the old letters in a box.

    Show answer or example answer

    saklıyorum

saklıyorum: the subject is “I” and the prompt asks for the present continuous. The letters are what you keep; the verb has dotless ı before yor and -um for the speaker.

  2. Put ben in the right case: do not hide this news from me.

    Show answer or example answer

    benden

benden: the news is being concealed from the speaker. Ben therefore becomes benden; bana would mark a recipient or direction, not the person it is hidden from.

  3. Use the future of saklamak for “I”: I will keep this notebook as a memento.

    Show answer or example answer

    saklayacağım

saklayacağım: this is a plan to keep the notebook as a memento. The future has linking y, and its k becomes ğ before the first-person ending; saklayacak alone would mean “he/she will keep”.

  4. Choose sakladı or saklandı: the child hid behind the curtain so that nobody would see them.

    Show answer or example answer

    saklandı

saklandı: the child wants to avoid being seen and hides personally. No separate object is being concealed here; sakladı would instead describe hiding something or someone.

Use it today

Write a short account of an object you kept as a memento and a gift you hid from someone. Give the reason for each action and use at least two different tense forms.
