You will say that you meet someone for the first time, in the present, past, future and negative, and mark the other person with -le/-la.
The idea
Tanışmak is the reciprocal of tanımak (to know): tanı- plus -ş-, so both people take part. The person you meet is marked with ile, written as the suffix -le/-la (-yle/-yla after a vowel): Kemal'le tanıştım, Ayşe'yle tanıştım. The stem ends in the voiceless ş, so the past is -tı, not -dı: tanıştım. The other forms are tanışıyorum, tanışacağım and tanışmadım.
| Person | Present | Past | Future | Negative past |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | tanışıyorum | tanıştım | tanışacağım | tanışmadım |
| sen | tanışıyorsun | tanıştın | tanışacaksın | tanışmadın |
| o | tanışıyor | tanıştı | tanışacak | tanışmadı |
| biz | tanışıyoruz | tanıştık | tanışacağız | tanışmadık |
| siz | tanışıyorsunuz | tanıştınız | tanışacaksınız | tanışmadınız |
| onlar | tanışıyorlar | tanıştılar | tanışacaklar | tanışmadılar |
Examples
- Ayşe'yle toplantıda tanıştım.I met Ayşe at the meeting. The person you meet takes ile, written as -le/-la, here -yle after the vowel e: Ayşe'yle. There is no -yi, because the verb has no object.
- Komşularımızla bu sabah tanıştık.We met our neighbours this morning.
- Yeni öğretmenlerle yarın tanışacağız.We will meet the new teachers tomorrow.
- Seninle tanışmak istiyorum.I want to meet you. Most pronouns take a linking form before -le/-la: benimle, seninle, onunla, bizimle, sizinle. Only onlarla is plain.
- Bu aileyle daha tanışmadık.We haven't met this family yet.
- Kursta kimseyle tanışmadım.I didn't meet anyone at the course.

Watch out
Do not mark the person with the accusative: Kemal'i tanıştım is wrong, because tanışmak has no direct object. Say Kemal'le tanıştım. Also keep the two verbs apart: tanımak is to know or recognise someone (Kemal'i tanıyorum), while tanışmak is the first meeting.

Add the suffix for 'with': I met Kemal.
Show answer or example answer
Kemal'le
Kemal'le: although the last vowel is a, the name ends in a palatal (clear) l and takes the front-vowel suffix -le. The apostrophe separates the ending from the name.
Fill the gap: Yesterday we got to know each other. Use the past.
Show answer or example answer
tanıştık
tanıştık: the stem ends in the voiceless ş, so the past ending is -tı; -k marks biz.
Fill the gap: Tomorrow I will meet the new neighbours. Use the future.
Show answer or example answer
tanışacağım
tanışacağım: the k of -acak softens to ğ before the vowel of -ım, which marks ben.
Fill the gap: They have not met yet. Use the negative past.
Show answer or example answer
tanışmadılar
tanışmadılar: -ma- negates the stem, -dı makes the past and -lar marks onlar.
