Düzeltmek puts something right: you can correct a sentence or straighten a picture. At B2, connect the person doing the correcting with the object affected, and distinguish that action from something getting better.

The idea

The stem düzelt- keeps its t: düzeltiyorum, düzeltirim, düzelttim. The past form has two consecutive t letters; in düzelteceğim, it is the future ending’s k that becomes ğ. A specific object takes the accusative: bu cümleyi düzeltmek. Compare the negative düzeltmiyorum and the polite request düzeltebilir misiniz?. The table gives affirmative forms for all six persons; with onlar, singular verb agreement is also possible.

Watch out

Do not lose the t and accidentally change the verb: düzeltiyor means someone is correcting something, whereas düzeliyor says something is getting better. In Hata kendiliğinden düzelmedi, the error is the subject; in Yazılımcı hatayı düzeltti, it is the object of the programmer’s action.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the present continuous, “I”: Şu anda bu cümleyi ___. (düzeltmek)

    Show answer or example answer

    düzeltiyorum

düzeltiyorum: the prompt asks for an ongoing action by “I”. Keep the stem’s t; düzeliyorum would describe the speaker getting better instead of correcting the sentence.

  2. Complete with the past, “we”: Dün metindeki bütün hataları ___. (düzeltmek)

    Show answer or example answer

    düzelttik

düzelttik: the corrections were completed yesterday by “we”. The stem ends in t, so the past ending starts with t too; the final k marks the first-person plural.

  3. Complete with the future, “I”: Yarın başlıktaki hatayı ___. (düzeltmek)

    Show answer or example answer

    düzelteceğim

düzelteceğim: the speaker promises a correction tomorrow. The vowel-initial person ending changes the future ending’s k to ğ, while the stem’s t stays.

  4. Choose the negative past form: düzelmedi / düzeltmedi. Hata kendiliğinden ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    düzelmedi

düzelmedi: the error itself failed to disappear. There is no object being corrected by the error, so the intransitive verb fits; the negative past matches “did not”.

Use it today

Write one sentence about correcting a text and one polite request to straighten something. Then describe an error that did not go away by itself, using düzelmek, and say who corrected it.
