Use uyanmak to describe the end of sleep: a weekend habit, an interrupted night or tomorrow’s early start. The person waking up is the subject; the verb does not say that they leave the bed.

The idea

The stem is uyan-, with final vowel a: uyanıyorum, uyandım, uyanırım. The aorist uyanırım presents a general habit; uyanıyorum can describe waking now or a current routine. In uyanacağım and uyanacağız, the future suffix’s k becomes ğ before the vowel of the person ending. Note the negative aorist pair uyanmam (I do not wake up) and uyanmayız (we do not wake up), alongside uyanmaz (he/she does not wake up).

Watch out

“Wake the baby” needs bebeği uyandırmak: uyanmak has no direct object. Compare Bebek uyandı with Bebeği uyandırdım. Nor is waking the same as getting up: uyandım ama yataktan kalkmadım is perfectly possible. In Sen de gece uyandın mı?, both de and mı are separate words.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “I wake up” in the aorist, for a regular weekend habit.

    Show answer or example answer

    uyanırım

uyanırım: the prompt asks for the aorist of a recurring habit. Add -ır to uyan- and -ım for the speaker; uyanıyorum would be possible in a routine description, but is not the requested form.

  2. Ask when someone woke up last night. Use the second-person singular past.

    Show answer or example answer

    uyandın

uyandın: dün gece places the question in the past. The stem ends in voiced n, so the past has d; the final -n identifies the person addressed.

  3. Say “I will wake up early tomorrow”, using the first-person singular future.

    Show answer or example answer

    uyanacağım

uyanacağım: yarın and the requested future call for -acak. Before the first-person -ım, its k softens to ğ; the stem’s n stays.

  4. The baby did not wake up despite the noise. Use the negative past.

    Show answer or example answer

    uyanmadı

uyanmadı: the baby remained asleep, so negate the event with -ma- before past -dı. Uyandırmadı would instead say that someone did not wake another person.

Use it today

Write a usual waking time with uyanırım, a sentence about last night and a plan for tomorrow. Add a sentence that makes clear whether you woke up yourself or woke someone else.
